WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Performance Advice & Tips
To help you prepare your routine, here are a few key points to consider:
1. Ability & Technique
-
Confidence is Key: Well-executed, simpler moves are far more impressive than advanced sleight of hand that is clumsily performed. Choose effects you can do comfortably, even when nervous.
-
Stay Organized: Rehearse your handling so you know exactly where your props are. Avoid searching through pockets; smooth transitions make for a professional act.
2. Presentation & Personality
-
Be Yourself: Don’t feel pressured to play a character. Whether your style is comedic or serious, let your natural personality shine through.
-
Audience Connection: Maintain eye contact and project your voice. Even if you are a close-up performer, ensure the entire room can hear and follow your story.
-
Entertainment First: Aim to be likable and entertaining. Avoid an arrogant "look how clever I am" approach—audiences connect best with performers they genuinely like.
3. Selecting Your Effects
-
The Opener: Start with something fast, visual, and reliable. A strong start helps you relax and wins over the audience immediately.
-
Show Variety: While not compulsory, we enjoy seeing a mix of skills (such as cards, coins, or rope). Avoid an act consisting solely of self-working "dealer" tricks; we want to see your unique skill set.
Final Tip
Record your rehearsals. Filming yourself is the best way to identify areas for improvement. Remember, we have all been in your shoes—we aren't here to judge you harshly, we are here to support you!
Mentorship: If you would like guidance before your performance, we can assign you a mentor. They will work with you to refine your routine and build your confidence.
